Season for Peak Fees: 05/15 to 09/06 The park, established in 1929, is 6400 acres with approximately 50% old growth coast redwood and 8 miles of wild coastline. The park is a World Heritage Site & Biosphere Preserve. The mixed understory includes tanoak, madrone, red alder, big leaf maple, and California bay. Ground cover is dense with a wide range of species. The campground development is located in an area that was logged in the 1920's. Vegetation is predominately red alder which will eventually give way to fir and second growth redwood. Wildlife is present in all areas. Salmon and steelhead spawn in Mill Creek. Bobcat, coyote, bear, deer, squirrels and chipmunks are most frequently seen. Varied thrush, Stellars jays, hawks, great blue heron and dippers are common birds. The topography is fairly steep with elevations from sea level to 1277'. The predominant mountain range is oriented in a north-south direction with steep cliffs adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, making the bulk of the rocky sea coast generally inaccessible except by Damnation Trail and Footsteps Rock trail. Approximately 1/2 mile of sandy beach is known as Wilson Beach or False Klamath Cove. This beach is unsafe for swimming due to steep beach slope, rocky conditions and frequent rough seas and cold water. Wilson Beach provides excellent tidepool opportunities at low tide. Discount Pass must be presented at the time of check in. Your DMV Disabled Placard/License Plate does not automatically give you a discount on your campsite. You will need to obtain a CA State park-issued Disabled Discount Pass (DDP) or Distinguished Veterans Pass (DVP). Individual campsites -Maximum allowable stay is thirty (30) nights per calendar year per park, with no more than fifteen (15) of these nights permitted during the summer season (May 1 through September 06). Group and Environmental campsites -Maximum allowable stay is fourteen (14) nights per calendar year per park, with no more than seven (7) nights of consecutive use per visit. After maximum allowable consecutive use has been reached no person or equipment may re-enter the same park to use any camping facilities until the expiration of at least two nights (48 hours). Del Norte Redwoods is site specific for reservations. You will select site at the time your reservation is made. Park entrance is 1.5 miles off highway, and the actual campground is STILL another mile from entrance. Park sign states "MILL CREEK CAMPGROUND" then, in small letters, "Del Norte Campground". Fees include entry for 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle or trailer, additional vehicles will be charged per night at the park. Although your site may hold 2 or more vehicles, your reservation only covers 1 vehicle (except for group or specialty sites). Campground has NO HOOK-UPS! South Loop (Sites 2-74): 1st 1st May 19 through May 24, 2017; reservations available May 25 through October 1, 2017; CLOSED when not on reservations. North Loop (Sites 75-145): 1st 1st May 19 through May 24, 2017; reservations available May 25 through September 4, 2017; CLOSED when not on reservations. Family sites accommodate a maximum of up to 8 people; and if the site permits, 2 licensed vehicles. |
